So much has been said about the changes in Gena Showalter’s writing since her conversion to evangelical Christianity, I jumped at the chance to review this novella. I was very curious to see how I would respond to her writing now, knowing I wouldn’t be particularly disappointed either way (I was never a huge fan of her books, but know she is very, very popular). I have a feeling this was written before the religion took hold of her writing, however.
Temptation in Shadows is paranormal/science fiction. It involves a really interesting concept, even if I thought it was a little bit icky.
I actually quite like stories that begin with a big betrayal, and this novella definitely has one: we have a hero who abducts our heroine. I like stories where trust has to be earned.
Perhaps because this is a shorter book and also one that works as a standalone story, I didn’t find the preachy, Bible-based themes the author’s newer novels are said to contain. In fact, I actually think Showalter is a much better author now than those earlier books I attempted a number of years ago.
I certainly won’t be seeking out the religion-oriented series, but I enjoyed Temptation in Shadows more than I expected to.
