Afterburn (After #1) by Sylvia Day

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Day, America’s premier author of provocative fiction, delivers the debut novel from Cosmo Red-Hot Reads from Harlequin.

The realiation that Jax still affected me so strongly was a jagged pill to swallow. He’d only been part of my life for five short weeks two years ago. But now he was back. Walking into a deal I’d worked hard to close. And God, he was magnificent. His eyes were a brown so dark they were nearly black. Thickly lashed, they were relentless in their intensity. Had I really thought they were soft and warm? There was nothing soft about Jackson Rutledge. He was a hard and jaded man, cut from a ruthless cloth.

In that moment I understood how badly I wanted to unravel the mystery of Jax. Bad enough that I didn’t mind how much it was going to cost me…

Afterburn (After #1) by Sylvia Day

Just as Sylvia Day’s best-known series – Crossfire – the After series is set in New York and features a wealthy society hero and an ambitious career woman. So of course there are going to be comparisons made. And of course, because the relationship isn’t as crazy (toxic!) and the hero not quite so obsessive, it’s not receiving the same praise.

However, I liked it. It’s a quick read with an open ending, but I think that Sylvia Day shines best when she’s writing stories with these themes.

I liked the way ambition drove the characters, and that they didn’t always do the nicest thing to get ahead. The relationship moved fast, but I believed it.

I was looking for something similar to the Crossfire books, and this was exactly what I wanted. In fact, because of the shorter length, I think in some ways this was a better-planned read.

Once I was done with this one I jumped straight into the next.
