Everything has a price . . .

Railway magnate Tom Severin is wealthy and powerful enough to satisfy any desire as soon as it arises. Anything – or anyone – is his for the asking. It should be simple to find the perfect wife – and from his first glimpse of Lady Cassandra Ravenel, he’s determined to have her. But the beautiful and quick-witted Cassandra is equally determined to marry for love – the one thing he can’t give.

Everything except her . . .
Severin is the most compelling and attractive man Cassandra has ever met, even if his heart is frozen. But she has no interest in living in the fast-paced world of a ruthless man who always plays to win.
When a newfound enemy nearly destroys Cassandra’s reputation, Severin seizes the opportunity he’s been waiting for. As always, he gets what he wants – or does he? There’s one lesson Tom Severin has yet to learn from his new bride:

Never underestimate a Ravenel.
The chase for Cassandra’s hand may be over. But the chase for her heart has only just begun . . .

Chasing Cassandra (Ravenels #6) by Lisa Kleypas

This book was my top recommended read in this piece I wrote for romance.com.au a few weeks ago.

I read Chasing Cassandra when is came out in March, and then read it again (and again). Lisa Kleypas is an author whose books I really love, and she also writes stories set in the Victorian era (my favourite, and also the era my books are set). I love her mix of humour and drama and history, and this was a lovely finish to the series.

Up until now I wasn’t sure how the pairing of Cassandra Ravenel and Tom Severin was ever going to work. Tom, in particular, was such a complicated character, one who is ruthlessly ambitious to the point he’d stab his friends in the back and not understand why that was a bad thing to do.

In the end these two ended up being some of my favourite characters in the series—and one of my favourite pairings. I like that Kleypas chose to not have them constantly locking horns. The way their relationship developed was a surprise—a good one.
And then there’s Bazzle the little street urchin Tom accidentally adopts, starting him off unnecessarily sweeping his office. He was one of the best things about the book!

This has been a fun series. In a time when there’s such a push for historically ambiguous historical romances, Kleypas manages to keep her books entertaining while also taking us to Victorian Britain.

The Week: 17th – 23rd February

This has been a busy week. I’m working hard to get my next book finished by my self-imposed deadline of mid-March; I’ve learnt that I’m the kind of person who needs those deadlines to get things done, even if it gets really stressful near the end!

This week I got my first look at the cover for The Artist’s Secret (I love it!), and I hunkered down and got to work finishing the third book, which doesn’t have a name yet.

I’ve appeared in a few articles in recent weeks.

With spring in the air in Canberra, we’re having a bit of a currawong invasion at the moment (that’s just a few of them!).

It’s deafening around here. Those birds are freakishly loud, especially when they fight, which is what is happening nonstop now!

Another busy week. I’m heading overseas VERY soon, and I have a book to finish before then. Packing also has to happen at some point!

The other day I found this on the American HarperCollins website. I can’t believe I’m turning up alongside these authors!

Hello Stranger (Ravenels #4) by Lisa Kleypas

Sometimes – and no matter how many other books you have piling up – you just have to reread a favourite author.

I’ve been working my way through Lisa Kleypas’ 1870s Victorian Ravenels series. What makes Hello Stranger unique is that, in a sea of dukes and duchesses, neither lead character is a member of the aristocracy. Kleypas has a knack for writing Victorian England, and her research into the day-to-day life of the era is fantastic.

I reviewed the book last year, and you can read it HERE.

Hello Stranger (Ravenels #4) by Lisa Kleypas

(And here’s the PINK US cover!)

Dr Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England, is as daring and independent as any man—why not take her pleasures like one? Yet she has never been tempted to embark on an affair, until now. Ethan Ransom, a former detective for Scotland Yard, is as gallant as he is secretive, a rumored assassin whose true loyalties are a mystery. For one exhilarating night, they give in to their potent attraction before becoming strangers again.

As a Ravenel by-blow spurned by his father, Ethan has little interest in polite society, yet he is captivated by the bold and beautiful Garrett. Despite their vow to resist each other after that sublime night, she is soon drawn into his most dangerous assignment yet. When the mission goes wrong, it will take all of Garrett’s skill and courage to save him. As they face the menace of a treacherous government plot, Ethan is willing to take any risk for the love of the most extraordinary woman he’s ever known.

I visited the library again on Monday. After figuring out the scary returns scanner, I sent two (of six) books back, and came home with eight more!

Yes, I’ve already read Marrying Winterborne, but I wanted a look at the hardcover version. I’m going to return it for someone else to borrow at the start of next week.

The USSR book is actually a 1980s encyclopaedia of Eastern European costumes, and the section about Ukraine was so fantastic (and strangely accurate, considering Russian propaganda – the only information crossing the Iron Curtain to get to the west – was [and still is] so anti-Ukrainian) I just had to borrow it. I actually want to buy it!
